I'll Alert the Media

Here's another one of those commercials that make you look twice:

A wife swipes her Bank of America card through the reader at the register and tells her husband "I just put 45 cents into our savings." He sneers. Next, she tells him she saved another 61 cents. He rolls his eyes. Then, on the phone with the bank, she announces they've saved $230 so far. He does a spit take.

A husband swipes his Bank of America card through the reader at the register and proudly tells his wife "I just saved 8 cents."

But, well no, he didn't. He put the card in upside down (so did she, by the way). Great for the camera; bad for savings. And, for that matter, buyings.

Would you please return all those items you didn't pay for, folks? Thanks.

Was it TLC? I think it was. They had this series, a kind of spin-off from Trading Spaces, where they'd send Genevieve Gorder and a crew of handyfolk to various small towns to give them a stem to stern makeover. Town Haul, it was called. Visa was a sponsor. Overall, a good show. Great heart.

But every episode featured one of the townfolk or one of the handyfolk going to the local antique store or whatever, and they'd take along the "Town Haul" credit card. Every single time, the camera would get a close-up of the card swipe. Upside-down, logo-up.

"You're ruining your card! Aaaagh!"

Boy, that show didn't stick around very long, did it? I remember seeing exactly one episode. Don't, however, remember any credit purchases. Of course, at the time I saw it, it was bedtime TV, so I don't remember much of anything about it... except never seeing it again.

I have to say, though, that I'm not a great leaping fan of Genevieve. If you saw her coat-the-walls-with-stinky-moss episode of Trading Spaces....
